Download Instructions - Getting Started:
This
page provides you with
the necessary steps to help you download
files
easily. Let’s get started!
Step One: Determine if You Have the Proper
Equipment
Audios require that your computer
have a sound card and either external or built-in
speakers. Be sure that your
volume is turned up, that your computer hasn’t
been put into “mute” mode, and that your speakers
are plugged in
(if external).
Step Two: Determine if You Have the Correct
Software
The audio file (in MP3 format) requires that you
have an MP3 player installed on your computer. If you don't already have it, we strongly recommend downloading the free Real Media Player
PC Users
If you are using a PC, click on the start button
on the lower left corner of your screen. When a
window opens, click on “All Programs”. If the
programs are on your computer, you should see
“RealPlayer" in the programs list. Make sure you
peek in the folders that appear in the list by
holding your mouse over the folder. If you don’t
see the program, you’ll need to download it.
Mac Users
If you are using a Mac, click on the apple on the
top left corner of your screen. In the menu that
opens, click on “Control Panel”, then select
“Launcher”. The Launcher is a window that will
show all of the programs installed on your
computer (you may need to click on the
Applications folder to see the programs). If the
programs are on your computer, you should see
“RealPlayer” in the list. If you don’t see the
programs, make a you’ll need to download it.
Step Three: Begin Downloading the MP3 File
Downloading files for the first time may be
overwhelming. But, in actuality, it can be a
rather fun process. In these lessons, you’ll
learn about power browsing on the Internet and
some tricks to make your life a little easier
when working on the Internet. So, be brave, and
give technology a chance!
Before you begin downloading the files, you
may want to consider reading a bit about how to
create a directory, or folder, on your computer.
This will help you to download your files into a
folder that you can easily locate. A good
step-by-step guide to creating new folders on a
PC can be found here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5550_create-folder.html
For creating folders (or groups) on a Mac click
here:http://macoptions.com/os85/finder3.html#Launcher
You may also find it helpful to plan a block of
time when you will be downloading files. If, for
example, you’re on a high speed Internet
connection (such as a network in your workplace)
downloading files goes quite quickly, but you
should plan at least ½ hour when you can download
the files in case there are any problems that
might pop up. The files should take
approximately 4-5 minutes on a high speed
connection.
Feeling brave? You can save time download
multiple files at once. After you start
downloading the first file, simply repeat the
instructions below to start the next file. We
recommend not downloading more than three files
at a time, because it may make your computer move
slower. We definitely don’t want that!
Downloading Files Using a PC:
PC users simply need to move the mouse cursor
over the link to the file they wish to download
and then right click. When a small menu appears,
click on “Save Target” or “Save Target As”. A
window will appear asking if the file should be
saved to disk. Select “OK”. You will be prompted
to name the file, and/or find the folder in which
you’d like the file to be downloaded. Click
“Save” and the file should begin downloading.
**Tip: Write down where you saved the files to
make it easier to find them later.
Downloading Files Using a Mac:
Mac users need to move the mouse cursor over the
link they wish to download. Then click the mouse
button down and hold it down until a small menu
appears. Click on “Save Target” or “Save Target
As”. A window will appear asking if the file
should be saved to disk. Select “OK”. You will be
prompted to name the file, and/or find the folder
in which you’d like the file to be downloaded.
Click “Save” and the file should begin
downloading.
**Tip: Write down where you saved the files to
make it easier to find them later.
Step Four: Opening the MP3 File
Now that you have successfully saved the files to
your computer, opening them will be easy. At this
point it may be tempting to simply go where you
have saved the files and double-click on the one
that you need. To keep things simple, we
recommend that you follow the instructions below.
To open your MP3 file, start RealPlayer and
select File, then click on Open. Go to the folder
where you saved the MP3 files. Double-click on
the file you want to listen to or play.
Final Thoughts
We have done our best to make this instruction
sheet as comprehensive as possible. If you find
any errors or need clarification about what we
mean for a particular step, please don’t hesitate
to contact us. Unfortunately, because of the
unpredictability and variety of computers, we
will not be able to offer individual assistance
on getting your computer setup. If you
are experiencing difficulties with getting your
speakers to work or your programs installed, we
highly recommend that you seek the help of a technician.
Downloadable Files
Remember, you do not want to actually click on
the links as you normally would do on a website.
If you click on the link, your browser will
attempt to open the file, rather than download
it. Refer back to step three to correctly
download the file. Please be patient. The
audio file may take some time to download,
especially if you are on a slower Internet
connection.
